THE FILMMAKERS
Annika Sweetland and Nacho Guevara are a husband-and-wife filmmaking team dedicated to social justice and global mental health advocacy. Both live with depression, which informs their collaborative work. Annika is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Public Health at Columbia University, who seeks to use documentary storytelling to disseminate lessons from her global mental health work. Nacho is a Costa Rican artist with decades of experience in theater, photography, writing, teaching and audiovisual. He spent his first 11 years in the U.S. without legal documents until their marriage in 2014. Together, they use their personal journeys and professional expertise to create powerful storytelling, aiming to reshape ideas about how mental healthcare is delivered and who can provide it.
Gustavo Fallas is an international award winning filmmaker from Costa Rica. His debut feature film, Puerto Padre (2013), won the Silver Zenith award for Best Film Debut at the Festival des Films du Monde in Montreal among others. His second feature, Río Sucio was selected by Cinergia, Cinequanon Lab and La Fabrique des cinemas du monde, Festival de Cannes 2016. Recently, his latest movie, La hija de Lázaro, won six awards at the 2023 Ícaro International Film Festival
